Important Fitting and Finishing Tips

You can count on Bunny Tuxedo’s to ensure that your tuxedo fits properly before you leave our store. However, here are the answers to some fitting questions we commonly receive:

How do I know what the best fit is for me?

Your body shape or size does not limit you to any one style of fit! Modern fit coats are a great choice for anybody! By no means are modern and slim fit tuxedos only meant for the slimmest of people. Oftentimes a modern or slim fit coat can help mimic the effects of personal tailoring, a feature unavailable in any rental. Classic, modern, and slim fits all have a wide range of sizes! The most important thing to think about when selecting the fit of your jacket is how comfortable you feel in it, an appropriately sized coat should be comfortable despite the type of fit.

Button your jacket!

During a fitting, make sure you button your jacket. If it produces an hour glass shape, the coat may be too tight. If it looks ‘boxy,’ it may be too big. No matter whether you are slim, stocky or muscular, a properly fitted jacket will taper slightly at the waist. Remember, the bottom button of the coat is always meant to be left undone.

Pay attention to your shoulders!

The shoulder padding of your tuxedo jacket should not extend beyond the tip of your shoulders and hang down your arm. If so, your jacket is too big! Conversely, if a significant crease or roll appears below the jacket collar in back, your jacket may be too small.

How many buttons should be buttoned?

You should never button all of the buttons on your tuxedo coat! As a general rule, you should leave the bottom button undone. This rule applies if you are wearing a two, three, four or five button coat. If you’re wearing a one button style, however, you should button the one button.

How should the pant leg fit?

If you prefer a straight leg pant then a modern fit pant might be best for you. Pants with sewn-in pleats can have the effect of adding a little extra volume to the thighs and hips, though very minimal. Flat-front trousers are a good option because they lack the sewn-in tuxedo pleat and tend to fall straighter down the leg. We currently do not carry skinny fit trousers, but most of our newer styles do come in a modern fit.

Where should the pant leg break?

The perfect length pant leg breaks slightly on top of the shoe and angles a bit downward.

To properly judge the fit of your trousers, you should wear your formal shoes when trying on your pants.

If your pants seems too long or too short definitely make sure that you are wearing your pants at the appropriate place on your hip! Formal trousers should be worn just above the hips to improve a better overall fit.

Do I need a belt?

Our formal trousers come with an adjustable waist band of three inches. Fear not, your pants won’t be too tight! With the adjustable waist band, you’ll have some flexibility and a comfortable fit.

On a properly fitted pair of formal trousers, the waistband should be even with the gentleman’s navel.

How much shirt sleeve should we see under the coat?

Shirt sleeves should extend one quarter to one half inch beyond the jacket’s sleeves.

How should a properly fitted collar look?

A formal shirt collar should wrap smoothly around the neck. If you can slip more than one finger between the collar and your neck, your shirt is too big. If no fingers fit, your shirt is too small.

Do the wingtips go on top or behind the bow tie?

The tips or flaps on a wing collar shirt should sit behind your bow tie; not on top of it.

How do I use cuff links and studs?

We have a web page showing you how to handle cuff links and shirt studs.

Do I leave the bottom button unbuttoned on my vest too?

If your vest is a six button fullback vest, it is okay to leave the bottom button undone. This also keeps the vest from bunching when you sit down.

If the vest has five or less buttons, all buttons should remain buttoned.

How long should the vest be?

Both cummerbunds and vests should cover the top waistband of your formal trousers when worn properly.

Should I wear suspenders?

You may wear suspenders with a cummerbund. However, you should not wear suspenders with a vest, (as they simply won’t show), unless you desperately need them to help keep your pants up!

Which direction do I wear my cummerbund?

Cummerbunds are worn with the pleats facing up. It’s said they are worn that way to hold your opera tickets and catch any crumbs that fall in your lap! So just remember, cummerbunds are crumb-catchers!

Should I wear a boutonniere or a pocket square?

It’s completely up to you! If your florist is planning on making large, extravagant boutonnieres then a pocket square is probably not necessary. Do remember that boutonnieres and pocket squares are worn on the same side of the jacket, so you don’t want that area to be too busy. If you’ve opted for a smaller, more minimalist boutonniere then a pocket square with a simple fold can be a very nice complement!

Pocket squares also make great accessories by themselves without a boutonniere! We carry pocket squares to match all of our vest and tie colors.

How do I fold my pocket square?

There is no one way to fold a pocket square! We have a web page showing you five methods to fold a pocket square, but you can always be creative and come up with your own folds!

Which side does the boutonniere go on?

A boutonniere should be worn on the left lapel and tilted slightly outward.

What color shoes should I wear?

Allow your pants color to dictate your shoe color. Typically, this means black formal shoes/socks with black pants and white shoes/socks with white pants. Black shoes are a pretty safe bet with any tuxedo color!

There are many shoe options to complement a grey or navy tuxedo. Black shoes are always a safe choice, but brown and grey shoes are definitely in style right now! Just take care when selecting shades and tones or brown.

What color socks should wear?

However, colored or patterned socks are trendy and a fun way to work in wedding accent colors. Interesting socks can make for some fun wedding pictures and an excellent part of the groomsmen gifts!

We have several retail sock options in our store and even more available for special order.
